Since the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), led by President Bio, assumed power in 2018, a targeted campaign to weaken the main opposition party, the All People’s Congress (APC), has been underway. This effort has seen the security sector, judiciary, and Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) used as tools to undermine key APC figures. Tactics have included dubious Commissions of Inquiry, asset seizures, travel bans, and continuous harassment. Such actions have severely damaged the reputation and effectiveness of many APC leaders, creating internal strife and diminishing the party's appeal to voters.

Challenges Facing the APC
Despite the SLPP's alleged misgovernance, economic mismanagement, and divisive policies, the APC has struggled to counteract these issues effectively. The ruling party's actions have eroded public confidence in the APC, making it imperative for the party to harness its vast human resources and introduce new leadership.

The younger generation within the APC acknowledges and appreciates the contributions of its senior members. However, in a rapidly evolving world, the party must reflect the aspirations and values of Sierra Leone’s youth. The wisdom of former British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli, who said, “Youth are the trustees of prosperity,” resonates deeply today.
In our digitally connected age, the APC needs leaders proficient in technology and aware of its impact across various sectors. With challenges such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and automation, it is crucial to have leaders who understand these issues and can develop effective policies for the digital age.
Advantages of Youthful Leadership
Research by Jack Zenger and Joseph Folkman in 2015 highlights the positive outcomes younger managers bring to leadership roles. They excel in embracing change, inspiring employees, seeking feedback, and challenging the status quo. Their ability to innovate, lead with inspiration, and drive progress positions them uniquely for leadership.
Fresh perspectives and innovative solutions are essential to the APC’s political agenda. Younger leaders, unencumbered by long-standing mindsets, can offer new approaches to contemporary issues, fostering positive change and progress.
Connecting with the Youth
Older politicians often struggle to engage younger voters, resulting in a disconnect between policy-making and the needs of the youth. By promoting younger leaders, the APC can bridge this gap, inspiring greater participation and ensuring a robust and inclusive democracy.
While experienced leaders bring valuable insights, they may prioritize short-term gains over long-term planning. Younger leaders are more likely to adopt future-oriented strategies, addressing issues like climate change, economic inequality, healthcare accessibility, and youth empowerment.

Former President Ernest Bai Koroma’s rise within the APC in 2002 exemplifies the benefits of youthful leadership. His fresh approach resonated with the electorate, demonstrating the value of introducing new faces in the political arena. Koroma’s leadership and eventual respectful exit underscored the positive impact of rejuvenating party leadership.
Empowering the Next Generation
The APC must embrace humility, integrity, and accomplishment in its next leaders. They should possess a blend of local and international connections to unite different generations and regions within Sierra Leone. The recent election disputes highlight the need for leaders with international clout to navigate such challenges effectively.
The new leadership should strive to unify Sierra Leone, manage conflicts, and promote peace. With the country currently divided, the APC must share power across regions, using young leaders to foster this change. The party needs a leader who mirrors the aspirations of its supporters and can bridge the existing divide between the government and younger citizens.
Finally, Sierra Leone’s development has stalled under the current SLPP government, emphasizing the need for the APC to adopt fresh perspectives and innovative approaches. To rescue the country, the APC must empower its younger generation, embracing their energy and dynamism to create a responsive, equitable, and prosperous political landscape for future generations.
