Former South African President Zuma Expelled by ANC for Backing Rival Party

ANC Expels Former South African President Zuma for Supporting Rival Political Party

Former South African President Jacob Zuma has been expelled from the ruling African National Congress (ANC) following his endorsement of a rival party in May’s parliamentary election. This move significantly contributed to the ANC losing its majority. The announcement was made by ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula on Monday.

“Zuma has actively impugned the integrity of the ANC and campaigned to dislodge the ANC from power while claiming that he had not severed his membership,” stated Mbalula during a press briefing. This action is seen as a violation of the party’s principles and constitution.

Background and Expulsion

Zuma, who led the ANC for years, faced suspension in January after publicly supporting the newly formed uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) party in the general election. Despite his suspension, Zuma went on to become the leader and public face of MK. The new party performed unexpectedly well, securing approximately 15 percent of the vote. This result was a key factor in the ANC's historic loss of its majority for the first time since the end of apartheid in 1994.

The ANC's share of the vote dropped to 40.18 percent, a significant decline from the 57.50 percent achieved in 2019, necessitating a coalition government. As a result, MK has emerged as the official opposition.

Reactions and Legal Actions

MK, in response to Zuma's expulsion, released a statement condemning the ANC's decision and process, denouncing the "grave injustices" against Zuma. The statement also mentioned that Zuma would consult with his legal team to explore possible actions.

“President Zuma will engage his legal team to urgently determine the course of action,” read the statement. Zuma has a 21-day period to appeal the ANC’s decision.

Historical Context and Future Implications

Zuma's nine-year presidency from 2009 was marred by numerous corruption scandals and a struggling economy. His relationship with the ANC leadership has been strained since his forced resignation as party leader in 2018. Zuma has been a vocal critic of his successor, President Cyril Ramaphosa, further deepening the rift within the ANC.

The expulsion of a former president and the rise of a new opposition party marks a significant shift in South African politics. The ANC, which has dominated the political landscape since 1994, now faces the challenge of navigating coalition governance and addressing internal divisions.
