Deputy Justice Minister Affirms Committee's Mandate and Election Timeline

Sierra Leone’s Deputy Justice Minister, Alpha Sesay, clarified that the Tripartite Committee formed to review the June 2023 elections will not consider a re-run. Speaking at the Ministry of Information’s weekly press briefing, Deputy Minister Sesay emphasized that the committee’s mandate does not include the possibility of re-running the 2023 elections, debunking misconceptions that have circulated among the public.

During the briefing, Sesay firmly stated that the committee's primary objective is to thoroughly review Sierra Leone’s electoral systems, structures, and processes. The aim is to propose substantial reforms to enhance the integrity and efficiency of future elections. He cautioned against misinformation that has led to public confusion and clarified that the committee's focus is solely on electoral reform, not on overturning the results of the previous election or replacing President Julius Maada Bio's current term.

Addressing speculation about the timing of future elections, Sesay outlined that Sierra Leone’s next general election is scheduled for 2028. He underscored that any grievances regarding electoral outcomes should be addressed through established legal channels, including recourse to the Supreme Court, and urged adherence to due process and protocols.

By providing clarity on the committee’s mandate and the timeline for future elections, Deputy Minister Sesay aimed to dispel uncertainty and ensure transparency in the electoral process. His statements seek to reaffirm confidence in Sierra Leone’s democratic institutions and uphold the rule of law.
