People in northern Nigeria are relieved at Bola Tinubu's reversal on the Niger sanctions.

Bola Tinubu, the Nigerian politician and former governor of Lagos State, recently lifted sanctions that were imposed on Niger, a landlocked country in West Africa. This decision has been met with relief in both Niger and northern Nigeria, as it will help to ease the economic and political tensions that have been building in the region.

The move marks a significant shift in stance for the regional bloc, Ecowas (the Economic Community of West African States), which had previously imposed sanctions on Niger in response to a coup that occurred in the country in 2020. Mr. Tinubu's decision highlights the challenges faced by him as he navigates diplomatic relations in the region, which has been plagued by instability, conflict, and political unrest in recent years. The lifting of the sanctions is seen as a positive step towards promoting peace, stability, and economic growth in the region.

In the beginning, Mr. Tinubu had a firm stance on the political situation in Niger. He strongly called for the junta to step down and imposed strict sanctions, which included closing the border. However, just after eight months, he reversed his position and lifted all restrictions. This sudden shift in his approach could be attributed to the unpopularity of his earlier stance among the public and the realization of Ecowas's declining influence.

Furthermore, the formation of an alliance among Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali, which led to the severance of ties with France and closer relations with Russia, also played a significant role in this reversal. This development could have further weakened Ecowas's influence in the region, and Mr. Tinubu's decision could be seen as an attempt to adapt to the changing geopolitical scenario.

Experts have put forward their opinions that Mr. Tinubu's abrupt actions may have been influenced by his desire to establish himself as a strong leader, particularly after assuming the Ecowas chairmanship. However, his impulsive decision-making has faced criticism, with some asserting that consultations should have been made before imposing sanctions.

The communities most impacted by the sanctions are those near the lengthy Nigeria-Niger border.

The initial military threat against Niger had a significant impact on the two countries' relations, causing economic strains and hardships for communities on both sides of the border. The tensions also led to a decline in trade between the two nations. The sanctions' lifting is a welcome relief, especially during the Ramadan month, signifying the return to normalcy for those affected by the sanctions.

In Nigeria, the reversal of sanctions is welcomed, especially in economic hubs like Kano, where trade with Niger plays a significant role. Businessmen anticipate a positive impact on the economy, hoping for improved trade relations and economic growth.

Overall, the lifting of sanctions is seen as a step towards repairing the strained relationship between Nigeria and Niger, emphasizing the importance of diplomatic dialogue and cooperation in the region.
