Amadu Koita Faces Harsh Detention Conditions

Alleged Coup Organizer Amadu Koita Faces Harsh Detention Conditions, Defense Claims Violation of Human Rights

In a shocking revelation during court proceedings, Defense Lawyer Counsel Sigismond Center has brought attention to the harsh detention conditions faced by Amadu Koita Makolo, the first accused in the alleged coup attempt in Sierra Leone. According to Counsel Center, Koita is reportedly being kept in a dark cell for 23 hours a day, with poor ventilation and unsanitary conditions, raising concerns about potential violations of his human rights.

Details of Detention Conditions:

The defence lawyer informed the Presiding Judge, Justice Kamanda, about the distressing conditions in which Amadu Koita is allegedly being held. Koita is said to be confined in a dark cell, making it challenging for him to access and communicate with the outside world. Counsel Center also highlighted the poor sanitary conditions in the cell, revealing that Koita is allowed to come out for a mere 30 minutes after 23 hours to attend to basic needs, including defecation and washing with water provided on a stool bucket.

Violation of Human Rights:

Emphasizing the severity of the situation, Counsel Center pointed out that the reported conditions constitute a violation of human rights, as outlined in section 20 of the Sierra Leone 1991 constitution. Deprivation of visitation rights from others further compounds the alleged violation, suggesting a disregard for the legal rights and well-being of the accused.

Background of the Case:

Sierra Leone authorities had charged 12 individuals, including Amadu Koita, with treason and other offenses related to an attempted coup on November 26. The government alleges that Koita played a significant role in organizing the coup attempt, leading to his arrest and subsequent legal proceedings.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the revelation of Amadu Koita's purported detention conditions adds a concerning layer to the already complex case. The defense's claims of human rights violations shed light on the need for a thorough investigation into the treatment of the accused. The court will likely address these allegations, ensuring that justice is not only served in the context of the charges but also in safeguarding the fundamental rights and dignity of the accused.
